Sometimes during the process of life we can become stuck in patterns of behavior and thoughts that are no longer purposeful. These thoughts and behaviors had at some point served us well and perhaps kept us safe or even alive. We tend to hold on to familiarity as it can appear to be safer then entering the unknown and we therefore stay in the safety of a repetitive pattern or lifestyle.
This pattern could now be impeding new experience from happening which could also hinder personal and professional development and growth. The reasons for developing these behavioral masks or defenses may have been right at the time, though now you may experience them as being rigid and keeping you in the same place. By working on ourselves to unstick the rigidity and loosen the mask we can eventually learn to live without these masks.
Self actualisation, which is getting in touch with what is our deepest truth, can be supported by the therapeutic relationship which provides an atmosphere of trust and acceptance. This can enable us to explore ourselves on a deeper more truthful level without being rejected or judged. Psychotherapy literally translated means 'healing or nursing of the soul' and is derived from the ancient Greeks and their understanding of human nature and the psyche. It is a therapy that works at a deep level. Guided by the therapist the client becomes aware of his/her limiting beliefs, patterns, restrictions and inner conflicts.
Clients are given tools to develop their own strengths and capabilities therefore expanding into a more concious, free and alive way of living which results in lasting change from within. If we can be who we really are, we will find ourselves doing things which genuinely satisfy us and give us enjoyment, and then we shall have what we really want.
